"We nearly lost an institution in the Espy, now we're losing St Kilda as a whole... Who wants a commercial meca that cuts St. Kilda in half! This area is ALREADY perfect...why does it need such changing redevelopment?!!" "The 2 sets of pedestrian lights on Jacka Blvd are not coordinated with the traffic lights at Cavell St. Traffic jams result, particularly in the warmer months, as pedestrians seek to cross Jacka Blvd. Does anyone know if plans have been incorporated for under or overpasses (or even coordinated lights!) to cope with the major increase in pedestrian traffic which will result from the new development? Or will Beach Rd. be just another North/South arterial where motorists have to cop it and wait in even bigger jams, choking the hapless residents with unwarranted pollution? " "I am an architect who is a resident of Acland St. It's a myth that there is open space in this development. The open space is the roof and the town square really is a food court. All views from the upper esplanade will be compromised. The developer stated that what was important to the residents is the horizon line. The upper esplanade is one of the few places that allows both foreshore and bay views in the area. The open space strategy needs a complete review." "I live minutes away from Chadstone Shopping Centre, an unchecked monster, to learn that that St Kilda is to follow the same fate is a sad indeed. I regularly visit St Kilda, and dread the problems that this new development will create for St Kilda. If this development does get built it will be a reflection on the governance of the local council, reprehensible and corrupt. That said I agree with Frank from South Melbourne, some responsibility has to be shared around." "For many years now the whole of St Kilda foreshore has been an eyesore, ugly and under-utilised. It's actually an embaressment compared to seaside boulevards around Austraia and the rest of the world. Develop, by all means, just make it conditional on increased security for residents, patrons and traders." "Trust the government to take away anything public (space / transport etc... ) and sell it off. This is a prime example of the government selling out to the corporate world, leaving the rest of us wondering why we voted for these idiots." "If you uncover who 'earns' the most money with that in terms of suddenly owning an additional nice real estate or whatever you have already won. It would be a pleasant surprise if we could really do something good for Melbourne public and against those soaking out the money from those who earn it." "what an appalling idea!there are more than enough weirdos in the area without enticing more drug addicts, pimps and the like. the council is opposed to sensible development but approves of this. what a farce!" "Another good outcome would be sustainable design. Solar panels and water conservation are good, and frankly necessary, measures for any new development. It will set a benchmark for further sustainable design." "The Docklands have been a failure - so un-Melbourne! Please don't let this happen to St Kilda. Melbourne is a city that is understated cool, not trash like Sydney. Please keep this ugly Darling Harbour style development well away from this precious site. Urban cool not bling!" "Hi, what you are doing is fab. We have to help peserve St Kilda for the unique place it is and stop this development. We don't want Fountain Gate and the people it will attract. Stay in your suburbs and leave St Kilda to the people who love it." "I'm looking forward to the triangle site development, and i hope this protest group doesn't manage to stifle it. It will be nice to have somewhere closer to home to go out at night and likewise, further shopping opportunities close to home. This is a very small parcel of land we are talking about, hardly large enough to be a 'wide open space', i think the impact of this on the area will be minimal." "Luddites! this land is currently filled with buildings and car parking, this suggestion moves the carparking underground (and expands it), providing greatly needed parking spaces, shopping options in St kilda are currently very limited if you happen to live there but aren't focussed on organic/weird/hippy trends (and slowly but surely, thankfully, the addicts and other 'gritty' scum of st kilda are being priced out). This development is great news!" "When will the anti-corporate crowd finally grow up? You sound like 15 year old pot smokers!" Sigh. I guess that "growing up" for Simon means massive retail complexes full of chain stores. What's he doing living in Prahran then - why not Fountain Gate? ~ web site editor "Just another example of a fact: Governments exist to do the bidding of major corporations. They have no interest in the people who elect them. The people are involved in the democratic process once every four years or so. Major corporations make it their highest priority to manipulate elected representatives on a daily basis. This horrid project will go ahead, and the corporations will get everything they want -- and the people will be ignored." "Most people visiting St Kilda do so in day-time to experience the unique beach/foreshore and restaurants/cafes. They don't come to shop! Nightclubs and bars are for the much fewer numbers of 'nocturnals' who are not interested in St Kilda per say, but are inextricably linked to drunkedness, drugs and ultimate unruly behaviour, not to mention the continual filthy state of St Kilda's main streets. 181 shops and five nightclubs is ridiculous and bears no relevence to the future prosperity of Melbourne's prime beach-front city." "When I first heard this, I thought they were joking. I can not believe they are about to put a shopping centre in Melbourne's 'gateway to the bay'. Living in Richmond, I love riding into St Kilda, having a picnic and enjoying its culture. I only dread the impact 180 shops, nightclubs are going to have on the area. It is going to be like one big mosh pit, nice work!" "PLEASE - EVERYONE WRITE TO THE COUNCIL AND PROTEST AGAINST THIS DEVELOPMENT BEFORE 28 NOVEMBER 2007. Take 20 minutes out of your day to either log on to portphillip.vic.gov.au or go to the St Kilda Town Hall, write a letter and register your protest. Everything about this development is disgusting and disgraceful - starting with the removal of the public's third party appeal rights. That is, the public NOT being allowed to have its say BEFORE the development is albeit approved. This is crown land which means it's for the general public. The public doesn't want 180 more retail outlets, a cinema, more bars and nightclubs. No matter how the Port Phillip Council and the developers disguise it - St Kilda Triangle will become a Chadstone by The Bay. The public just wanted to be consulted - a basic democratic right. Why has this been taken from us? The Council's token 28 day submission process is a sham. How can the public possibly rally in this small amount of time to vent it's opposition to this $300 million development - or is this the Council's plan? A cunning stunt. And don't get me started on The Palais - how can a heritage listed building be left to private enterprise to restore? How dare the State Government hand this responsibility to the Council and how dare the Council tender it out to developers. As I have said, everything about this development is disgusting and disgraceful. Come on Melbourne - have your say, don't let St Kilda turn into a Chaddie by the bay." "I am not suprised at 'developments' on our amazing foreshore but I still live in hope." 2 November 2007 "The opportunity to embrace St Kilda's arts and entertainment history has been lost to another shopping centre. How embarrassing for the developers and architects to be associated with a lost opportunity. Not to mention the traffic that the centre will attract. Who's managing this car magnet.. "The Cars that ate St Kilda". We can already see the vacant shops in Fitzroy and now Acland Streets. Vistas are part of St Kilda. Separate cars from people." 1 November 2007 "For an area that is already difficult to travel around on weekends, why would anyone think bringing yet MORE people in will make it a better place? And as for creating a huge shopping mall, WHY? I live in Elwood so that I DON'T HAVE TO LIVE AT CHADSTONE! Melbourne doesn't need to become like Brisbane. Please don't ruin St Kilda. Development can be ok - but this isn't." 31 October 2007 "Take a walk along the lower Esplanade now for a glimpse of the "future"..concrete,ugly structures, crappy cafes..and where's the beach gone? Rename it Sardine Street." 30 October 2007 "Please leave st kilda alone...Fitzroy street is bad enough! why does the council and government want to put a nail in the coffin of peaceful society and culture? The answer, Money."
